Nearly three decades ago, Lopez et al proposed a series of stages of the tobacco epidemic over the course of the 20th century that showed how prevalence and mortality had evolved for men, and then, two to three decades later, for women as well.20 This temporal characterisation of the epidemic, and a subsequent update almost two decades later that incorporated emerging evidence from low- and middle-income countries,21 has served to better inform and stimulate policy action to reduce smoking prevalence, disease and deaths.22 Smoking control efforts ought to be guided by a more granular description of how smoking prevalence and consumption have evolved
